The Battle of Bunker Hill, fought on June 17, 1775, during the American Revolutionary War, was a significant early confrontation between British forces and colonial militias.
The defenders were primarily composed of colonial militia from Massachusetts and other New England colonies. They were not a formal army but rather local men who had taken up arms to resist British rule.
The colonial forces initially aimed to fortify Bunker Hill but ended up building a redoubt on Breed's Hill, which was closer to Boston and more strategically significant for defending against British advances.
